“ARDEN, ARE YOU here?” Edmund closed the door of their rooms behind him. He’d expected to find Arden in his office, hunched over his books, but he hadn’t been, and Ciaran hadn’t seen him, which had provoked an immediate jolt of panic. Which was senseless. There was no reason to believe Arden was anything but fine and safe in the palace. A glance showed him an empty sitting room, so he turned to continue on to the bedchamber. “Arden?”

“Here.”

Edmund stopped and turned again. Arden’s slender hand waved over the back of the couch. Edmund would’ve laughed if the action wasn’t so unlike him. He’d been tired lately with all the late nights spent working and the obligations at court—part of the reason Edmund had been looking for Arden was to propose they take an evening for themselves without any work. Arden would likely protest, which Edmund understood. It was as if he could feel the threat looming over them. A break was necessary, though. And, really, he wanted some time with Arden.

He rounded the couch, expecting to find Arden stretched out with a book, perhaps having sought a change of scenery from his office. What he actually found was Arden stretched out, eyes closed, without a book in sight. His alabaster pale skin was stark white. Worry shot through Edmund.

“Are you all right?”

Arden didn’t lift his head, but he opened his large green eyes and focused on Edmund. It seemed as if it took him more effort than it should have. “Yes. And no.”

“That’s…informative. And not at all reassuring.” Edmund perched on the edge of the couch at Arden’s hip.

Arden smiled wanly. “Sorry.”

“What’s wrong?”

“I had a headache—I’ve been getting them the last week or so—and I thought I would step away from my books for a little while.” Arden rubbed a hand over his face. “By the time I got here I was feeling lightheaded and a bit queasy. Thought I’d better lie down.”

Apparently, he hadn’t even thought he could make it to the bedchamber.

Worry was back, bordering on alarm, flooding through Edmund. He put a hand to Arden’s cheek. “Are you feeling any better?”

“The room has stopped spinning. So, yes?” Arden nuzzled into Edmund’s palm.

Edmund smiled just slightly. Arden could joke, which had to be good. “Shall I call for a healer?”

Arden looked as if he was about to shake his head and then thought better of it. “No. It’s fine.”

“You can’t tell me you think this is just from overwork.” He couldn’t believe it, not when Arden obviously wasn’t feeling well enough to sit up.

“I don’t, but I think I know what it is.”

“What do you think it is, then?” He brushed his thumb back and forth over Arden’s cheek. He hated to see it so pale.

Arden closed his eyes, then opened them again, fixing his gaze on Edmund. “Larkin got like this when she was first carrying Gower. My courses are late too, though I hadn’t even realized with everything else going on.”

For a moment, Edmund couldn’t speak.
